The Facts on Fluoride: Why Science Still Matters in Public Health
In a time when misinformation spreads faster than facts, it’s more important than ever to stand up for science—especially when it comes to public health. One of the most persistent myths is that fluoride is harmful. Unfortunately, some high-profile figures with no dental or medical background have amplified these unfounded fears, putting communities at risk.
Let’s be clear: Fluoride is one of the most successful public health interventions in history. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists community water fluoridation as one of the top ten public health achievements of the 20th century. Why? Because it’s safe, effective, and affordable. Study after study shows that fluoride significantly reduces tooth decay in both children and adults. It works by strengthening tooth enamel, re-mineralizing demineralized starts to cavities, and making teeth more resistant to acid from plaque bacteria that feed off of foods in the mouth.
Yet despite overwhelming scientific consensus, anti-fluoride activists continue to spread misinformation, often citing discredited studies or cherry-picked data. A current politician and longtime vaccine skeptic, has questioned the safety of fluoride without acknowledging the mountain of peer-reviewed research that contradicts his claims.
What’s especially dangerous is that this kind of rhetoric undermines trust in public health institutions. It encourages policy decisions based on fear instead of facts. When cities consider removing fluoride from water supplies based on activist pressure, the consequences are real: cavities increase, dental costs go up, and the people who suffer most are often those in low-income communities with less access to dental care.
Fluoride isn’t a government conspiracy—it’s science. It is often found naturally in ground and ocean water and was first discovered in ground water in the state of Colorado after the population was found to have significantly lower caries than the general population!
Water fluoridation and fluoride treatments are supported by the American Dental Association, the World Health Organization, and countless health experts worldwide. Spreading fear about fluoride may win attention, but it does real harm. Public figures have a responsibility to speak truthfully, especially when health is on the line. Let’s be clear – tooth decay can be detrimental to both our physical and mental health!
We all deserve clean, safe water—and we deserve leaders who listen to science. Fluoride works. It’s time to protect it, not politicize it. Dr. Funke and team are strong supporters of science and support water fluoridation and fluoride treatments for children and adults at routine dental appointments.
