Dentures in Rochester MN
What is a Denture?
A denture is sometimes also known as a dental plate. It is an appliance worn in the mouth as an alternative to having missing teeth. It is intended to mimic the teeth and soft tissues that have been lost.
What are Dentures made out of?
Most dentures are made of acrylic and metal. There are different options and types of dentures:
-
Conventional dentures are made after all teeth have been extracted and the tissues (gums) have had time to heal. Often time it will take approximately 8-12 weeks of healing once all teeth have been removed.
-
Immediate denture is fabricated and inserted immediately after the teeth are extracted. The tissues will heal under the denture and often times will changes shape. Immediate dentures often times need to be relined to fit properly. Relines are often times done 6 to 12 months after placement.
-
Pressed acrylic are the “old school” and conventional method of denture fabrication
-
Digital Dentures are digitally created and designed. These have gained great popularity and traction in the dental world. Digital dentures are printed with a 3-D printer and then characterized to look and feel natural.
Denture teeth are made of plastic or porcelain. Dentures can be fabricated to fit over endodontically treated teeth and a complete denture can be attached to dental implants to allow for a more secure and stable fit of the appliance.
Like everything in life, dentures will wear over the course of time and chewing and need to be replaced or relined in order to keep the jaw alignment normal. Bone and tissues are naturally lost over time without teeth or implants. Remember back to the old saying “use it or lose it”. Our bodies no longer think that the bone is needed without the teeth or implants in place. Regular dental examinations are still important for the denture wearer so that the oral tissues can be checked for disease or change. Just because you don’t have teeth doesn’t mean that you no longer need to see a dentist. Regular oral cancer screenings and appliance checks are important.
