Inlays & Onlays in Rochester MN
Med City Dental offers biomimetic restorative dentistry in Rochester MN
What are inlays and onlays?
Inlays and onlays are a conservative biomimetic dentistry approach to replace broken or decayed tooth structure. Dental inlays and onlays can be made of porcelain, gold, or composite resin. This treatment method bonds restorations to the damaged area of the tooth. An inlay is similar to a filling and is used inside the cusp tips of the tooth. In contrast an onlay covers the cusps of the tooth.
The great thing about inlays and onlays is the biomimetic approach rather than more aggressive alternative approaches. These restorations can be used as an alternative to a full coverage crown. It is able to restore strength and function back to the tooth without removing unnecessary tooth structure.
How are inlays and onlays placed?
Inlays and onlays often only require a single visit when choosing porcelain or resin as the restorative material. The old filling or the damaged or decaying area of the tooth is removed and the tooth is prepared for the inlay or onlay. Dr. Funke uses CEREC technology to scan the tooth and digitally design the restoration to be placed. This information is then sent to our in-office milling machine to be made. The restoration is tried in the mouth and then characterized before being placed in our kiln.
The restoration is then bonded in place and adjustments are made to get a proper bite and fit.
Multiple Restorations
The great thing about having scanning and milling capabilities in the office is that multiple teeth can be restored in a single appointment. The restorations can be designed, milled, tried in, kilned, and seated in a single appointment. There is no longer the need for multiple appointments and temporary restorations.
