Dental Crowns Rochester MN
What is a dental crown?
Dental crowns are often times called caps. They are made of resin, gold, metal, or ceramic and placed on top of the tooth to replaced lost or fractured tooth structure.
Why do I need a dental crown?
There are a number of reasons that a dental crown may be recommended. Some indications may be large existing fillings that are wearing or breaking down, cracks or fractures, to strengthen the remaining tooth structure after root canal treatment, or for cosmetic reasons.
Unfortunately, many times dental treatment looks like dental work. It is our goal to provide dental treatment that looks natural and beautiful. Dental work should improve your function, esthetics, and confidence!
What is the process for getting a dental crown?
Dr. Funke strives to provide the treatment that is appropriate for each individual patient. He will help determine the cause and reason for the crown to help prevent further need. There is no such thing as single tooth dentistry at Med City Dental. Dr. Funke will ensure that the tooth of concern is treated as well as the rest of the patients dentition.
Dr. Funke uses a CEREC digital scanner to take photos that are used to generate a computer model of the patient’s teeth. This eliminates the need for the old “goopy” impressions.
The digital scans can be used to either design the crown chairside for milling for same day crowns, inlays, and onlays. Dental treatment that is milled in our office no longer needs a second visit and temporary crowns. No more need for weeks of restrictions!
More complex cases like veneers, bridges, and implant restorations can be sent to one of Dr. Funke’s highly skilled dental lab technicians. These cases will require placement of refined provisional restorations with some temporary restrictions.
How long does a dental crown last?
Like most things in life, how well you take care of things makes a significant impact on longevity of things. In the case of dental crowns, most dental crowns will last at least 5 years with most crowns lasting 10 years or more. Even though the tooth may be fully or partially covered by a crown, it can still get a cavity/decay where the crown meets the tooth. Proper brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings and care will significantly improve the longevity of your dental crowns.
What materials are used to make dental crowns?
There are several different materials that can be used for dental crowns. Tooth colored crowns can be made with either porcelain e.max or zirconia. We also offer gold crowns in Rochester MN at our office. There are crowns that can be made with a combination of these gold, porcelain, and zirconia. Dr. Funke will help you determine the most appropriate dental material for your treatment plan. Same day crowns can be made with porcelain e.max in our office.
