We strongly believe that a dental cleaning is more than “just a cleaning”. It is a way to to improve your mental and systemic health. Often times you may hear us call a dental cleaning a prophylaxis. Prophylaxis is a treatment performed to thoroughly remove plaque and calculus from the teeth and gums. This treatment is important in reducing bad bacterial and for stopping the progression of gum disease known as gingivitis and prevent progression to more advanced gum disease known as periodontal disease.

Some of the benefits include:

  • Buildup Removal. Tartar (also referred to as calculus) and plaque buildup, both above and below the gum line, can be detrimental to periodontal health. Home brushing and flossing routine is only a part to a good oral health routine as it can be impossible to remove all debris, bacteria, and deposits from gum pockets.
  • A healthier-looking smile. Unhealthy gums can appear puffy, red, and easily bleed. Calculus and plaque can discolor the teeth and dramatically hurt the appearance of your smile. Prophylaxis is an effective treatment in achieving a clean and healthy looking smile.
  • Fresher breath. Bad breath (or halitosis) is generally indicative of advancing periodontal disease. A combination of rotting food particles (possibly below the gum line) and potential gangrene stemming from gum infection, results in bad breath. The routine removal of plaque, calculus, and bacteria at Med City Dental can noticeably improve halitosis and reduce infection.
  • Systemic/Full Body Health. Our mouths are the gateway to our bodies. Constant inflammation from buildup of bacteria can increase stress on our bodies. It has also been shown that maintaining healthy oral tissues can help decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease including heart attack and stroke as well as Alzheimer’s disease.
