Fred Carlson, D.D.S.
Meet Dr. Carlson
“Smiles are the eyes to your soul. Improving one’s smile creates self-confidence which in turn relaxes the facial muscles making you look younger. The increase in confidence allows you to be more successful in both your personal life and your professional life.”
Dr. Carlson grew up in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He was active in Boy Scouts, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. During high school marching band practice one fall day during his junior year, he decided that dentistry was the profession he wanted to pursue. “I always enjoy working with my hands and with people, so what better profession is there than dentistry?” He began pursuing his dream by attending the University of Iowa as an undergraduate and also attending the University of Iowa Dental School. While in dental school, he was awarded the Wesley Collins Darby Award for the top junior dental student in operative dentistry. Following graduation Dr. Carlson moved to Rochester and purchased a dental practice from Dr. Robert Miner, an outstanding Rochester dentist. They practiced together for five years before Dr. Miner retired at age 75.
Dr. Carlson and his wife, Carol, live on an acreage in NE Rochester. This allows a lot of room for Toby (their Black Lab) to run outside. They have three grown daughters. Angie lives in Minneapolis. Stacy and her husband Kris, along with their daughter Sophia also live in Minneapolis. While Kelly, Zach and Cordelia live in Madison. When Dr. Carlson isn’t treating patients, he is either riding his Harley, duck hunting, or tending his apple trees.
Education and learning are imperative in Dr. Carlson’s career. Dr. Carlson actively pursues current techniques and technology to maintain an advanced practice. He received the prestigious Master of the Academy of General Dentistry Award, the highest award within the Academy, given to fewer than 5% of dentists nationwide. He is one of 28 dentists in Minnesota awarded the Master designation. Master credentials speak for themselves within the dental profession, but Masters must actively extend their influence and talents into the communities that they serve. Be committed and be leaders. Dr. Carlson began his post-graduate level education program with the Pankey Institute in Key Biscayne Florida. For years he traveled there to take courses from the top dentists in the world. He has taken all of their courses and is now a mentor to students in Minnesota who are taking these courses.
Areas of enjoyment and interest are treating problems concerning esthetic dentistry and cosmetic dentistry, as well as creating beautiful smiles for his patients. He also has spent a lot of time learning about TMD (TMJ) and facial pain. He has been very successful in treating headaches and face/neck muscle pain without the need for surgery or medications.
Dr. Carlson volunteers in Rochester at the Good Samaritan Dental Clinic and has been a member of the Rochester Rotary for over 25 years.
