Dr. Fred Carlson  makes his own gold crowns/inlays

Gold restorations are the best restorative material used today. When made properly, they can last 50+ years in the mouth. The chewing wear of gold restorations is similar to that of normal enamel. Gold will not break down and it will look good and function for many years. Dr. Carlson enjoys working with gold. He is the only dentist in southern Minnesota who makes his own gold crowns, onlays, and inlays. Ask about this choice as a restorative material.

Which teeth have crowns?

Dental Services

Med City Dental offers complete dental care services in a convenient downtown location to accommodate a full range of our patients' needs.

Bridges

Replace one or more missing teeth and will keep teeth from “drifting” into the space of a missing tooth, and maintain normal function and bite for the jaw joint. A bridge has a crown anchored to the teeth on either side of the missing tooth, with an artificial tooth in the middle to give support and is permanently bonded into place.

Composite bonding or tooth colored white fillings

Chipped, broken, discolored or decayed teeth may be repaired or have their appearance corrected using a procedure called composite bonding. A dental composite material with the look of enamel and dentin is applied into the cavity or upon the surface of a tooth, where it is then sculpted into shape, contoured and hardened with a high-intensity light. The result is a restoration that blends invisibly with the remainder of the surrounding tooth structure and the rest of your natural teeth to create a healthy, bright smile.

Crowns

Crowns (caps) are necessary when a tooth has had a bad fracture, a large filling that is breaking down, after root canal therapy, or has decay around it. A crown will cover, protect, seal and strengthen the tooth. The tooth is cleaned out and reinforced with a strong titanium composite and then reduced and prepared for the application of a crown. Our crowns are either made of 18 karat gold or porcelain that has been fused to gold. In the case of anterior teeth, a white zirconium base is used for a more natural look.

Dental Implants

Dental Implants are artificial tooth root replacements that are used as part of the prosthetic (artificial replacement) dentistry in order to compensate for tooth loss. Often the result is not only an enhanced smile, but also a more youthful appearance, since missing teeth cause the face to collapse, making you look older. We can restore one tooth or a whole lower arch, whichever your needs dictate.

Digital X-Rays

Thanks to new digital technology, we are now able to take x-rays with up to 90% less radiation than from older conventional equipment. In addition, this new technology generates images that are diagnostically superior to x-ray film. Retrievability and portability are also greatly enhanced. Environmentally safe, the digital x-rays require no developing solutions, fixers, cleansers, or x-ray mounts.

Facebow

In our office we use what is called a facebow to ensure accuracy when mounting study models, or models of teeth. The facebow is a device that records the relationship of the maxilla (upper arch of mouth) to your jaw joint. This is then used to mount the study models onto an articulator which simulates a jaw joint. We use this articulator to diagnose bite and joint problems. It is also used in large restorative cases when many crowns are needed.

Full Mouth Restoration

While consulting with you about a smile makeover to primarily improve the aesthetic appearance of your smile, Dr. Carlson may discover that there is a need to provide necessary treatment to correct functional problems with the bite, muscles, teeth, and bone structure. If you need a full mouth reconstruction, the materials available today make it possible for Dr. Carlson to provide you with durable, functional, and clinically sound treatments that also look natural.

Gum Lift

Gum Lift also known a crown lengthening: Is a cosmetic dental procedure that raises and sculpts the gum line. Gum lifts involve reshaping the tissue and/or underlying bone to create the appearance of longer or symmetrical teeth, resulting in a more aesthetic smile.

Onlays/Inlays

Onlays/Inlays are used when a cavity is too big for a filling but not big enough for a crown. An inlay is a filling that is within the cusps, whereas an onlay “overlays” the cusp providing strength and protection to the tooth. Inlays and onlays may be 18 karat gold or tooth colored. They are prefabricated by a lab and bonded to the tooth.

Periodontal Therapy

Is when the tissue and bone around the gum pockets (spaces between your tooth and gum tissue) begin to pull away from the tooth. The more tissue and bone that is lost, the deeper the pockets and the looser the teeth become. This eventually leads to tooth loss. Healthy gum pockets measure 1-3 millimeters and do not bleed. Gum pockets that measure 4 millimeters or more are indicators of periodontal disease. The picture of x-rays shows a person that does not have a single cavity, but is losing all of their teeth due to bone and periodontal disease.

Root Canal Therapy

A root canal is the removal of the nerve and dead tissues after it has been infected or abscessed due to deep decay, a cracked tooth, or trauma to the tooth. The nerve is the "life supply" to the tooth so after it is removed, the tooth will become brittle and it will need a crown to protect, seal, and strengthen the tooth.

Smile Makeovers

Smile Makeover involve a comprehensive assessment of your smile aesthetics in order to improve its overall appearance. Typically one or more cosmetic dentistry procedures, such as dental veneers, dental implants, gingival sculpting, and teeth whitening, will be required for several teeth in both the upper and lower arches in order to achieve the look you want.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening is perhaps the most commonly recommended cosmetic procedure. Teeth are often stained from smoking, food, drink (coffee, tea, red wine) or poor hygiene. Bleaching the teeth is an easy, fun and effective way to obtain a whiter, brighter smile at home.

Veneers

Veneers are porcelain facings bonded to the front surfaces of the teeth. They are used to whiten, close spaces, strengthen, or repair chipped or worn teeth. They are approximately 1mm thick (the thickness of a fingernail). The natural surface of the tooth is "shaved" off about the same thickness so that when the veneer is bonded to the tooth, the tooth doesn’t look or feel thicker.
