Fred Carlson, D.D.S. in Rochester, has provided exceptional service and has been creating beautiful smiles for more than 30 years. Dr. Carlson excels in family dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, and restorative dentistry.
As an alumnus of the Pankey Institute, Dr. Carlson provides patients with a high level of personalized care. He is superior in treating Tempromandibular joint disorders (TMD or TMJ) and smile design dental makeovers which are customized to your individual needs.

Dr. Carlson grew up in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He was active in Boy Scouts, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. During marching band practice one fall day during his junior year, he decided that dentistry was the profession he wanted to pursue. "I always enjoy working with my hands and with people, so what better profession is there than dentistry?" He began pursuing his dream by attending the University of Iowa as an undergraduate and also attending the University of Iowa Dental School. While in dental school, he was awarded the Wesley Collins Darby Award for the top junior dental student in operative dentistry. Following graduation Dr. Carlson moved to Rochester and purchased a dental practice from Dr. Robert Miner, an outstanding Rochester dentist. They practiced together for five years before Dr. Miner retired at age 75.
Dr. Carlson and his wife, Carol, live on an acreage in NE Rochester. This allows a lot of room for Toby (their Black Lab) to run outside. They have three grown daughters, Stacy and her husband Kris, Angie and her husband Tom both live in Minneapolis, while Kelly lives in Madison WI. When Dr. Carlson isn't treating patients, he is either riding his Harley, duck hunting, or tending his apple trees.
Education
Education and learning are imperative in Dr. Carlson’s career. While the state requirements are 15 credit hours every year, Dr. Carlson attends 200+ hours of continuing education each year. He joined the Academy of General Dentistry early on. They have strict requirements for membership requiring annual education. He has achieved his Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry, which requires both lecture and participation classes, as well as an all day test which he took in Chicago. He is one of 53 dentists in Minnesota to attain this level. Dr. Carlson began post-graduate level education program with the world renown Pankey Institute in Key Biscayne Florida. For years he has traveled there to take courses from the top dentists in the world. He has taken all of their courses and is now a mentor to students in Minnesota who are taking these courses.

Expertise
Areas of enjoyment and interest are treating problems concerning esthetic dentistry and cosmetic dentistry, as well as creating beautiful smiles for his patients. He also has spent a lot of time learning about TMD (TMJ) and facial pain. He has been very successful in treating headaches and face/neck muscle pain without the need for surgery or medications.

Dr. Carlson volunteers in Rochester at the Good Samaritan Dental Clinic and has been a member of the Rochester Rotary for over 25 years.
